Cinder Block Vs Concrete Block – 8 Differences and Uses

Cinder Block Vs Concrete Block

Cinder block vs concrete block comparison may not be recognized at first look and in the construction, the same materials are used but in the cinder block, there is extra material.

In the construction sites, cinder blocks are usually made of concrete and coal cinders and rectangular in structures while concrete blocks are flattened structures made of steel, cement, or wood.

Cinder blocks are made from cinder which was a waste product of burning coal and actual cinder blocks are pretty cool but in modern constructions, there is very little use of cinder blocks as compared to concrete blocks because cinder blocks are in lighter weight and not too much stronger.

concrete and cinder block

Concrete blocks are made of gravel, crushed stone, or sand and mostly used in the walls and many other constructions, and also the use of these blocks is more as compared to cinder blocks because concrete blocks have strong strength and can stand with loads.

Cinder Blocks:

Cinder blocks are made of concrete as well as coal cinders and because of the proportion of the aggregate components cinder blocks are much lighter.

In some places, these blocks are avoided because these are not very strong and to bowing, and buckling these blocks are more susceptible, and also repairs are very costly.

cinder block

Cinder blocks are used for several purposes such as;

  1. Used as a safety barrier.
  2. Used for fixing windows and doors.
  3. These are used to decorate the walls.
  4. Cinder blocks are used to differentiate the appearance of structures.
  5. The cinder blocks are also used for building an outdoor cinder block bench.

The wall made of cinder block is given below;

Strength:

There is no significant amount of tensile strength in cinder blocks and these are not too much stronger and in building and construction projects, several building codes explicitly prohibit the use of cinder blocks.

Concrete Blocks:

Concrete contains water, cement, and aggregates such as gravel, crushed stone, or sand and mixed together and allowed to cure. For use in construction, these ingredients bond into a hard, strong, durable substance. There are many types of concrete blocks in different shapes and can be either hollow or solid.

concrete blocks

There are several uses of concrete blocks such as;

  1. In the construction of walls, these blocks are primarily used.
  2. These blocks are also used for the outdoor stairs.
  3. As a security barrier, concrete blocks are also be used.
  4. Concrete blocks are also used in foundations and piers.

The wall made of concrete block is given below;

Strength:

These blocks are much stronger than the cinder blocks and can stand with much pressure. These blocks have strong tensile strength and can stand up to far more.

In the cinder blocks, ash is used as an aggregate.Ash is used in the construction of wall units, in concrete blocks.
From concrete and cinder, cinder blocks are produced.From steel, wood, or cement, concrete blocks are produced.
In weight, cinder blocks are lighter.In weight concrete blocks are heavier because it contains sand and stone.
To withstand high pressure, the cinder block does not have the strength.With high strength, concrete block is a hard building element.
Cinder blocks are not very flexible and used in lightweight projects.Concrete blocks are much stronger and can be used in almost any structure.
In small projects such as garden walls, cinder blocks are used more frequently.In large construction projects and more important projects, these blocks are used.
For nearly 50 years these blocks weren’t been massively produced and represented as an old-fashioned building material.Due to concrete blocks harder structure and other advantages, these are used more.
The overall costs of cinder blocks are higher because these blocks require a lot of repairs.Concrete blocks do not require repair and are less costly.
