Brick size – In 2 Standards [Modular or non-Modular]
|Brick size is very important in construction because Brick is a commonly used material for building and is made of burnt clay and mainly composed of lime, sand and bearing soil. The mixture is fired into the manufacturing process and contains a good mixture of these elements and then the dry brick is made.
The dimensions of bricks are very important because bricks are used in various constructions. Different fields need a different sizes of a brick and also different shapes and different formation is required.
For different uses, bricks are made in different ways and there are many types of bricks that are used as a building material. It is important to choose your bricks wisely and also check the dimensions to ensure they fit with the design layout.
The standard brick coordinating size is 225 mm in length, 112.5 mm in depth and 75mm in height and this includes 10mm mortar joints and standard size for brick is 215 mm in length, 102.5 mm in depth and 65 mm in height.
The length of brick should be twice the width of brick and the thickness of one mortar joint the bricks are great insulators and store heat energy from the sun after the sunset.
In Pakistan, with mortar and centre to centre the standard size of brick is 9 x 4.5 x 3 inches.
Standard Brick Size:
The most common brick sizes range from 31/2″ x 21/4″ x 7 5/8″ to 3 5/8 x 3 5/8 x 11 5/8″ (depth x height x length) according to brick industry, these measurements are the actual size but bricks are also measured by nominal size that includes mortar.
The nominal size of most bricks fits into a grid such as door frames, wood and windows component, and standard size bricks are most commonly used in construction.
Brick size in different types
According to the size of bricks, the bricks are classified into many types:
- Modular Brick Types And Sizes
- Non Modular Brick Types And Sizes
Modular Brick Types And Sizes:
Modular:
The modular brick dimensions are 2 ⅔ in x 8 in x 4 in and for the easy planning of builders and masons a structural modular brick has two or three holes through the centre and no raised edges.
These bricks are commonly used for the construction of homes and buildings.
Engineer Modular:
For the brick piercing engineer, modular bricks use rectangular slots rather than round holes and are used for residential projects. The size of these bricks is 203mm x 101mm x 101mm and the holes through brick are created to assist in manufacturing these bricks allowing more cooling of brick material during creation and are lighter in weight.
Closure Modular:
The nominal dimensions of closure modular are 3 ⅕ in x 8 in x 4 in and the specific dimension is 203mm x 81mm x 101mm and pierced with more holes than traditional modular brick for the mortar to grab onto built into the brick.
Roman:
With the nominal dimensions of 2in x 12in x 4in and specified dimensions of 204mm x 50mm x 101mm, the roman bricks are flat and slender bricks. For building fronts, columns and other areas these bricks are used to deliver a distinct and attractive finish.
Norman:
The Norman brick’s size is very similar to the roman bricks, the nominal dimensions of the Norman bricks are 2 ⅔ in x 12in x 4in and specified dimensions are 304mm x 67mm x 101mm and the Norman bricks have rectangular piercing for mortar flow through.
Engineer Norman:
The nominal dimension of engineer norm bricks is 3 ⅕ in x 12 in x 4 in and the specified dimension is 304mm x 81mm x 101mm this material adds a bit more material to work with this brick also features pierced slots for the mortar to grip ensuring a batter overall hold.
Utility:
In overall height and depth, utility bricks are design concepts like plain sided, pierced with holes that are round. The nominal dimensions of utility bricks are 4in x 12in x 4in and the specified measure of utility brick is 304mm x 101mm x101mm.
The utility bricks are easy to match with the building components like doors and windows frame.
Meridian:
Meridian bricks are used for building purposes where more individual length is required. The nominal dimensions of meridian bricks are 4in x 16in x 4in and specified dimensions are 406mm x 101mm x 101mm. the extra length allows more flexibility and strength in offset patterning.
Non Modular Brick Types And Sizes:
The nonmodular bricks offer specified and actual dimensions and drop the nominal dimensions of their modular counterparts.
There are several types and sizes of nonmodular bricks:
Queen:
The queen bricks are nonmodular bricks and have large square cores for mortar flow and the specified dimensions are 2 ¾ inches in height, 7 ⅝-to-8 inches in length and 2 ¾-to-3 inches in D.
King:
With an additional squared core built into a more substantial length, the king brick is larger than queen bricks and specified dimensions of brick are 2 ⅝ to 2 ¾ inches in H x 9 ⅝ to 9 ¾ inches in L x 2 ¾ to 3 inches in D.
Standard:
A divot in the centre of brick gives a shallow tub-like appearance and it serves the same purpose as cores do. The special dimension for this brick is 2 ¼ inches in H x 8 inches in L x 3 ½ to 3 ⅝ inches in D.
Engineer And Closure Standard:
The engineer brick style features the same five rectangular core placements and varies only in measurement. The specified dimension of engineer brick is 2 ¾-2 13/16 inches in H x 8 inches in L x 3 ½-3 ⅝ inches in D.
Closure standard brick is built with circular cores and to finish corners and edging with its clever flow-through design the closure standard bricks are used and the specified dimension is 3 ½ to 3 ⅝ inches in H x 8 inches in L x 3 ½ to 3 ⅝ inches in D.
